The Junior Mathematical Congress (JMC) is a congress for pupils from all over Europe in their last years at school. During this meeting the participants present the results of a mathematical project, which they have worked on. These talks about arbitrary mathematical topics constitute the main focus of the congress. However, meeting pupils from many different nations is an essential part as well.
The 8th JMC will take place from August 3rd to August 9th 2008 in Jena (Germany), the second largest town of Thuringia. The hometown of Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss is situated in the heart of Germany. Science and research have a great tradition here – in 2008, Jena will bear the title Stadt der Wissenschaften (City of Sciences) and the university is going to celebrate its 450th anniversary. Moreover, the year 2008 will be the Year of Mathematics in Germany. So, the JMC will take place in a worthy setting.
The registration for the JMC has closed. Accommodation, meals and social programme is only provided for registered participants. But there are some events that are also open for guest:
As far as the capacities allow, guests can participate in all talks and guest lectures, see our programme for further information. Furthermore there is the poster exposition of most of the participant's projects in the foyer.
August 4th to 8th 2008, Carl-Zeiss-Straße 3, Hörsaal 3.
We have organised a copy the Imaginary exhibition here in Jena. The exposition from the Mathematical Research Institute in Oberwolfach presents algebraic surfaces in a very creative and colourful way. These geometrical objects usually described by abstract formulas can so experienced by the visitor's eyes.
August, 4th to 8th 2008, Foyer Carl-Zeiss-Straße 3 (Campus Ernst-Abbe-Platz)
During the Year of Mathematics 2008 the MathFilm Festival 2008 organizes presentations of mathematical films in many german cities for a broad audience. The organizers of the JMC and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science in cooperation with the Hörsaalkino Jena-Team present the MathFilm Festival 2008 in Jena.
Tuesday August 5th 2008, 19:00-22:00, Hörsaal 3, Carl-Zeiss-Straße 3 (Campus Ernst-Abbe-Platz), entrance free
The Junior Mathematical Congress (JMC) is a congress for pupils, created in 1992 as an event associated with the European Mathematical Congress, which takes place every other year (2008 in Amsterdam). Since then, it has taken place seven times (sometimes as part of the supporting program of the International Mathematical Congress) generally close to the main congress. The following cities did host the JMC:
We are Die Wurzel (German link only), a registered non-profit association of students and postgraduates of the University of Jena, in close cooperation with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The translation of our name is 'The Root'. We have a 41-year-tradition of supporting talents. Our sphere of action comprises mathematical camps for pupils at least twice a year and the publication of the monthly periodical bearing the same name.
